Maxis iPhone 3GS review

Less than a year ago, we got hot and bothered when the iPhone 3G finally came to Malaysia via Maxis. When the 3GS was announced, we thought we were going to get it really late again, perhaps in time for a 4G launch.

Surprisingly, Malaysia was one of the first ASEAN countries to get the much-hyped 3GS. The iPhone 3GS has more features than its predecessor. Its new feature are all good especially push notifications, compass, 3.2MP camera, and oleo-phobic screen coating.

The iPhone 3GS is twice as fast as the 3G model. The apparent speed is noticeable in terms of cold starts, complete shutdowns, loading of web pages and opening resource-heavy games.

One interesting function that is new to the 3GS is the voice control. You can sort of instruct the phone to do simple tasks by speaking to it. You can speak to it via either its headset or the mic near the speakers. In case you are wondering, the headset is the same uncomfortable one that is bundled with the latest iPod Shuffle. It was more accurate in calling my contacts but bad at identifying songs.

This model is supported by the new iPhone OS 3.0, which comes with more than 100 new features such as cut, copy and paste, Spotlight Search and landscape keyboard. And its 3.5-inch display makes it a breeze to browse and view content such as music, movies, TV shows and pictures.

Battery life did impressed me a little, lasting nearly two days of normal usage, way better than the 3G. Somehow, I think I’ll hold out again for the time being since multitasking is a real deal breaker.

If you are planning to get an iPhone, insist of buying a Maxis set. With the service card, you can claim warranty at any Maxis Centre within 1 year. Since Maxis set is officially unlocked, you can use it with any SIM card including Celcom and Digi.

Be wary of US sets as they are often software unlocked to be used here in Malaysia. You will be at peace of mind with a Maxis set as you can upgrade new firmware in the future without worrying of the phone being locked.
