PSP-290 GPS receiver review
After fiddling around with my PSP-290 GPS receiver for some time, it is time to post my review about it. I find out that it’s more than just a toy even though it’s a compact GPS unit that weights only 16 grams.
The GPS receiver is developed as an accessory to enhance your portable gaming experience, connecting through the USB port on the PSP. Metal Gear Solid, which is an action adventure game, makes use of the GPS receiver to search for and collect new characters that can be recruited as soldiers. Besides using the PSP-290 GPS receiver to play game, I mainly use it to support MapThis homebrew software and Go Explore (reviewed previously).
MapThis is a fully capable mapping software but you need to install your own map. I downloaded the maps from Google, which is a bit of a chore. But you will be rewarded with the capability to pin-point your exact location on the map even while you are on the move.

A nifty function on the MapThis software is that it is able to warn you if you are driving too fast. This is made possible since it is able to calculate your current speed. The only downside is that it won’t prompt you which direction to take to reach your destination. The Google maps I downloaded do not have geocode embedded in it; only maps from USA have geocode.
It does take some time to lock on to the satellites, like around 1 minute, provided the GPS receiver is able to collect data from at least 3 satellites. Some people have been asking me whether there is any subscription fee involved to use the GPS system. Since it is an open system, the service is free and it is available for anyone with a GPS receiver, not limiting to the PSP-290.
Previously, I was considering buying a bluetooth GPS receiver and use my Nokia N73 as the navigation tool. My doubts are now gone as I like this PSP-290 GPS receiver even more. The maps are more easy on the eyes as the screen on the PSP is much bigger compared to the N73. So I don’t regret spending my money on this from Play Asia.
Unfortunately, at this point the PSP-290 GPS receiver is out of stock at most online stores. Then, I stumbled upon another way of getting the GPS receiver, which is to buy the Minna no Golf series PSP game. The PSP game is packed together with the GPS receiver.
