Shrek Forever After movie review

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Yay, got back from another movie premiere today. This time it’s the anticipated animation film, Shrek Forever After. Thanks to Jeff for the invitation! Can you believe it that Shrek is finally over and done with after sharing much joy with us since a decade ago? Read on to find out what I think about this finale film.

Shrek Forever After is the 4th and a sequel to the Shrek movies. After challenging the evil dragon, rescue a beautiful princess and save your in-laws’ kingdom, what more could a giant orge ask for? Well, if you are Shrek, you suddenly have trouble dealing with daily routine in the family with the babies and all. Rather than scaring the villagers away like he was before, a reluctant Shrek agrees to sign autograph on a pitch fork to the delight of his fan.

What happens to this giant’s roar? Yearning for the days when he felt like a real ogre, Shrek was duped into signing an agreement with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate versions of Far Far Away, where the giants were hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona had never met before. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo what he did with the help of his friends to save, restore the world and his one true love.

This show gave me some laughs. I would think that most of the funny scenes have already been shown in the movie trailer. Most of the old characters are back, with Rumpelstiltskin being introduced as the villain. This movie is also guest starring Pied Piper! With the pipe in his mouth blowing music, you can expect some funny things to happen. Look out for the orge dancing moments.

Oh, did I mention about Fiona? Well, she’s definitely different, character wise, in the alternate universe. The most memorable character in this show for me is Puss in Boots. In the alternate universe, the once agile Puss is now very fat, who can’t even turn around to lick himself!

With the givaway title as forever after, you do expect a happy ending, don’t you? Well, I would say this is a good way to say goodbye to our much loved characters. I heard Puss in Boots will get his own movie in 2011. So it’s not a final goodbye after all? Anyway, 3/5 stars for this fairy-tale gone wrong that everyone love.

The Descent Part 2 movie review

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I just got back from a horror roller-coaster ride of The Descent Part 2. This time the movie preview screening is courtesy of Nuffnang. Now, here’s what I think of this British made film.

Do you still remember the movie The Descent? Well, this is the direct continuation from the first film. It’s set 2 hours after the end of Part 1.

To refresh your memory, here’s a little review about The Descent Part 1. After the tragic death of her daughter, Sarah (Sauna McDonald) takes five of her friends for a refreshing trip to an underground cave. After the entry in the cave, conflict starts to occur as they find it difficult to find a way out.

Previously, no one has ever entered the cave and made it out safely. This was proven by the existence of human skulls scattered around them. The conflict got worse when they know that there is man-eating monsters in the cave. Each of them had died, one by one, with Sarah trying her best to stay alive. God knows what happened to Sarah’s good pal Juno (Natalie Mendoza) after she was left fighting with dozens of monsters.

From The Descent Part 1, the ending seemed to be floating. The audience did not know whether Sarah got out of the cave or not. Well, The Descent Part 2 provides the answer.

In this Part 2, Sarah managed to escape from the cave. Five of Sarah’s friends were reported as missing from the expedition. Then, the sheriff forced her back into the cave again, as a guide, along with a rescue team led by Dan (Douglas Hodge).

Guess what happened next? When the rescue team of six people goes deeper, the same problem occurs all over again. The monsters are back to attack and eat each and everyone of them. Juno is found to be alive in the cave but can she protect the remaining members of the team?

Sadistic, horror and awesome, that’s my words for describing the action scenes that depict the monsters trying to slaughter the rescue team. The director, Jon Harris, is no doubt an extraordinaire at serving chills down your spine. 4/5 stars for keeping me at the edge of my seat for the most part of the show.
